Going Smartphone-Free

After years tethered to my iPhone, I took out its SIM card and placed it in a new Nokia 2780. It’s a red flip phone with T9 texting. And it’s changed my life.

I’m reluctant to evangelize too hard about downgrading your phone. Smartphones are useful tools that undoubtedly improve our lives in many ways.

Yet, without my iPhone, I have significantly more time. My focus at work and at home with my kids has improved. I’m thinking, feeling, and communicating more deeply. Disconnecting from my smartphone has removed distractions and made my life richer.

I still use my iPhone for work as-needed. I manage marketing projects, which means I sometimes need to utilize social media apps and other programs that are best viewed on a smartphone.

Switching to a flip phone isn’t for everyone. But if you think it might be for you, here is a quick list of the items I’ve been using:*
